Thirteen Idea for Teaching from Thirteen Books in the Old Testament
1. Old Testament Overview: Give each student a name of Old Testament person then ask student to becomes a “specialist” in that name. Then put yourself in the chronological order – give overview.
2. Can’t understand Book of Mormon unless understand Old Testament. Book of Mormon people are from the Old Testament. Many question that result in revelation in the Doctrine and Covenants are from when Joseph Smith was reading the Old Testament. New Testament shows Old Testament prophesies fulfilled.
3. Well leaving a message for his girl friend he just left a scripture message (Revelation 3:20). Result: Have to go to scriptures to find the answer. Application: use own scriptures. (Her answer: Gen. 3:20).
4. Heavenly Father sent Adam an eternal wife, Eve and told to multiply and replenish the earth. He gave a plan to population. What the Book of Genesis teaches of chastity:

5. Make up work – use Old Testament movies (Distribution center carries the Genesis Project – some of them are good).
6. Book of Numbers Chapter 6. The Nazarene Covenant: Covenant for a period of time, to increase holiness by accepting certain restrictions, no wine, grapes, and raisins; not cut hair; not go near dead. This was to remind them of the covenant. To give them benefits/blessings for the rest of their lives. Application: Missionaries.
7. Numbers 21:4-9. Alma 37:7, 13:18-22. Serpent – Representation of Jesus = sacrament, prophet, bishop. Sits as serpent on end of pole (Sitting on council). Joshua 1 – guide for accepting callings. Especially v. 5, 8, 9, 16. V. 18, punishment for not accepting.
8. Judges 1:19. Set goals. Some you accomplish some you don’t. Some of our problems are as chariots of iron.
9. Ruth verses Samson. Samson had all and tossed it out. Ruth didn’t have much of a chance being born outside the covenant but her name was blessed by thousands. Messages of those who keep covenant and those who don’t. Best book to teach about manners and customs is the Book of Ruth. Recommend the book: Manners & Customs by R. Gower.
10. David and Goliath. Role play – make a video of it.
11. Psalm 46. Count 46 words from beginning=Shake. Count 46 words from end backwards=fear. Shakespeare helped translate the bible. In 1146. Shakespeare held his 46th birthday.
20,000 words were used in the Bible
Shakespeare used 18,000 words.
3,300 words are used in the Book of Mormon.
12. Psalms and Proverbs. Teach like using Salt and Pepper. Assign students to one of the chapters to become specialists. Some time during the year have the students share their information.
13. Isaiah – Poetry of parallelism. Teach poetry not literature and is not so frustrating.
14. Haggai 1 – Teaches Temples. Israelites put off the building a temple. Early LDS put it off also. Blessings were held. Postponing temple responsibility denies/delays blessings from God. Taking covenants with each other and God, giving blessings to children and us and binding the Lord to us.
15. Last 2 verses of Malachi, Quoted often. Joseph Smith was told by Moroni. In the New Testament it was repeated. Also in Doctrine and Covenants and also 3 Nephi 25.
16. Bible Dictionary p. 736-7. Names of persons. Look at the meanings of them. Melek (Hebrew) means King. Bayait =House. Bet. El=God; ben=son; benjamin=son of my right hand; ab=father; Abinidi=prophet of the father and son. Jehovah = Salvation.
17. Why don’t things like that happen any more? We have Latter Day prophets. Ask to be part of miracle in using me to bless lives through testimonies.
