Using Group Work in Our Classes
- Good Ice Breaker to divide into groups: Person on the eisle is #4-then 3-2-1 etc
- Get to Know Your Group
Purpose of Working in Groups:
- Return and Report
- Mix up with different groups and people
- Wakes them up
- Make sure there is enough time to give report back [can use a bell to let them know how long until time is up
- Teacher can assess the understanding
- Never use groups with 5 or more
- Use starters like: longest nails; most recent birthday; most kids; shortest hair, etc. to go first
- Plan Groups:
- give assignment for individuals 1st
- Mix strong with weak, shy or talk/non talkative
- Give clear instructions or handout
- Designate the person incharge
- Get to know your students
- Require the use of their scriptures
- Always have a purpose--not to just fill time
How to give students time to complete assignment?
- The kids that get done faster -- give them a bonus question
- Do the project ahead yourself to time it
- Set time asside in your lesson plan
- Mix up when doing it
- Always give time limits
Why move around?
- Provide writting supplies
- Keep students on track
- Share ideas and give ideas to get started if stuck
- Get to know the students
- To touch
How have the students report?
- Use any media: music, skit, overhead, picture, etc
- Report in different ways: 1 student, whole group, etc
