Reasons we teach the Old Testament
- Whole of the gospel in the first five books. Perfect = Sermon on the Mount.
- Teaches through stories. 2 Nephi 10:4, Alma 34:14. Look at the beginning, end and middle.
- Middle of Genesis: Genesis 22 Abrahams sacrifices
- Exodus 12 Passover
- Leviticus 16 Day of Atonement
- Numbers 21:1-9 Brass Serpent
- Deuteronomy 18:18
- (Matthew proves Jesus was like Moses)
- Old Testament have to ask what the lesson is. Book of Mormon you see and thus we see
- Genesis to Malachi Beginning to Restoration
- Genesis to 2 Kings Ends in Babylon. Middle of that story is the covenant.
- Exodus Moses lead from Egypt to Sinai. End the promised land. What do you want of us? Be holy
- Exodus ends happy tabernacle built. Given priesthood to become holy.
- Book of Leviticus is the Book of Obedience
- Look for Christ.
- Provide the background
- Teaches holiness
- Teaches lower law develops appreciation for higher law. Similar to proxy service (body) and High Priest in temple (Higher priesthood).
- Temple. Holiness = completeness. Hebrew qodesh noun, separation, shiny; adjective holy, verb = sanctify. (Saints). Who are your saints? Your holy ones. Holiness to the Lord = consecrated to the Lord.
Become holy by studying the word of God. Describe what you think God is merciful, loving etc This is holiness. What does God do? Moses 1:13. This is holiness.
- Leviticus 1. Sacrifices. Moses 4:7.
- v. 2. Bring offering the best (not white)
- v. 3. The offering
- voluntary own will
- hand on head v. 4. What did it mean? What does it mean for us? How does it point to Christ?
- Kill, v. 5.
- Sprinkle blood represent life of the animal
- Burn, v. 6-9 and see Savior
- Scriptures used to be divided by paragraphs so when confused at the breaks look for the PP mark.
- Building the Tabernacle. Moses told them what to do then next you see that they reported back to Moses what they did. Obedience. The cow represents the most expensive piece of property.
- Atonement, in Hebrew means ransom and covering over sin. Atonement requires death (see Leviticus 1:5)
- What does this mean to us? What does the Lord want from us? Find a story (Abraham and Joseph (Faith and obedience), go through he steps of the story and apply to the above listing. Step five has God provides a substitute.
- Sacrifice is to make sacred.
- Another story Hannah, Passover, Samuel and Saul (Obedience better then sacrifice) Obedience has a cost but ends with the Sweet savior of the Lord.
- Leviticus 8-10. Priesthood or make sacred Exodus 19:6. Consecrations of the Priests.
- washed with water (Lev. 8:6)
- dressed, put on, gird (Lev. 8:7-9)
- oil sanctify (Lev. 8:12)
- sacrifice (Lev. 8:14-22)
- anointed with blood,
- right ear
- right hand
- right toe (Lev. 8:30)
- Breastplate bears Israel on shoulders and breast. President of the church is the same as the Mosaic High Priest. Headband holiness to Lord. Consecration. On the day of atonement different clothing. Flap forming a pocket. Urim and Thummim communication with God. Oil represents spirit. Why? Essences of olives. Life, light, healing.
- 1 Samuel 16:13. How long did David have the Spirit? Until he sinned. Isaiah 61:1. Jesus read in the synagogue. Psalm 133.
- Blood life, atonement, all living, crucifix, Gathesemene.
- Ear are used to hear. Hear in Hebrew is shama = obey
- Thumb acting
- Foot action
- Christ and water = baptism. Acts 10: Holy Ghost. Blood, Gethsemane.
- Leviticus 9:22. God accepts sacrifice and priesthood by fire. Next story chapter 10. Fire of rejection.
- Leviticus 9:24 people shouted. Leviticus 10: 33 Aaron held his peace.
- We are full of these two fires. Why so import to measure up in the Lord. High Priest represent Israel, no consecration . Israel (all suffers)
- Examples: 1 Kings 8 and Judges Samson
- How was Kirtland built? sacrifices and acceptance. 7 days later priesthood keys given
.
- Sacrifices, atonement and acceptances of Tabernacle. Preparation (chapter 8), obedience (8:1, 9:5), sacrifice and obedience (9:5-21), prayer and blessing (9:22-24), glory/fire and acceptance (9:1-2)
- Nadab and Abihu. Disobedient (Lev. 10:1), fire of rejection (Lev. 10:2), instruction (Lev. 10: 3-20)
- Day of Atonement. Leviticus 16.
- One time each year the high priest stood before the Lord, this is very dangerous and very serious. They were dressed in the traditional clothes of a slave.
- Leviticus 16:31
- Washing, Leviticus 16:4
- Lev. 16-7-10. Scape is the English word for escape.
- Lev. 16:11

- Lev: 16:34
- He goes into the holy of holies 3 times.
- Ark of the Covenant: Hebrew terms covering of ark
- Kaforith = covering or ransom; this brings you to the atonement.
- Jewish climax of the Day of Atonement sins pronounced on the goat.
- We stand at the foot of Mt. Sinai.
