True Submissiveness: Yielding Our Hearts to God

Note: This was one of the best sessions that I attended. I had a couple of others that I liked very much too, but one was very good.

Different ways to get students involved: (1) getting them to think (2) getting them to write

When we write down impressions, we show the Lord that we value His impressions. Each day write down one thing that you want to remember and then write down one prompting that the Lord wants you to do.

Story of a boy that need a blessings to heal his sight and hearing. A couple were having marital problems and they were seeking counsel. Their son was suffering from an illness that affected his sight and hearing. The parents were seeking a blessing for their son. They were told that if they would give up the hatred that they had for one another their son could be healed. The mother and father looked at each other and after a long period of time, the father said, Our son will have to learn to live with his problems then."

Story about a student who got A's in ethics - The student at the university was getting A's in classes in ethics and had done some cheating in order to receive the grades. He wondered how it was that a person such as he, would be willing to do the unethical things that he did in order to receive A's in ethics.

Pride is the greatest obstacle to happiness in life. "My will" is what drives pride. It is not all bad, because we need that drive, but it is thru humility that pride is tempered and is the virtue from which all other blessings flow.

Humility: Long suffering teachable meek yielding submit contrite submissiveness.

What does submit mean to you: negative or positive. Usually has a negative connotation today.

True submissiveness to God will guide us in all the other relationship that we have. Jesus taught us that we need to be truly submissive. Why? Do to our fallen nature it is essential to be in this conditions to progress but we allow need to be submissive to God's will in order to fill the full measure of our creation. The proud will remain enemy to God forever. Jesus said any man that would come after him will deny himself. They that would loose oneself ....will find oneself.

Submissive foundation quality for every other virtue: faith hope charity. It will help us resolve things that prohibit our growth in other areas. If do think that we don't have a problem, we have a "greater" problem than we think.

Paul said that you are not your own you are bought with a price. Maxwell said that the submission of one's will is the only unique thing that we can place on God's alter. The form of submission that is completely safe is our submission to God.

Ezra Taft Benson:
"Deepen our joys, expand our vision, quicken our minds, strengthen our muscles, lift our spirts mighty blessing increase our opportunity comfort our souls raise up friends, pour out peace. Men and women who turn their lives over the God will find out that He can make a lot more out of their lives than they can."

Outward we can be submissive to someone but inwardly we can be in complete rebellion.

God Loved Us so He Sent His Son, 4th verse
In word and deed he doth require My will to his. Like son to sire, Be made to bend and I as son learn conduct from the Holy One.

All problems have this basis due to lack of submissiveness........

Alma/Gideon: I would that you would be humble....full of patience and long suffering.

Scriptures re submissiveness:
Moses 5:16CainWho is the Lord
Moses 7:59Enoch
Genesis 22Abraham and IsaacCheck Josephus, p37
Genesis 37, 39-50Joseph
Moses 1Moses
1 Samuel 12-15Saul

Matt 26:22The Apostles
Mosiah 11King NoahWho is the Lord...
Act 9:6PaulLord what wilt thou have me do so?
Mosiah 2-4King BenjaminHelped people to wrought a mighty change in their lives

Mormon: None acceptable to God except the meek and lowly in heart.
Evidences.

  1. A submissive person does not always need to get his own way.
  2. A submissive person does not always have to be right. Consider the points of view of others. Not afraid to say I'm sorry, will you forgive me.
  3. Will simplify desire for material thing or outward positions of success. Content with what we have or what we are. Any call is great not just the elite ones.
  4. Exercises tolerance and patience toward those who are different or less adequate. Action upon love.
  5. Repent rather than rationalizes. Sins that we have to worry about are the ones that we won't let got of.
  6. Is patient with the gradual unfolding of God's purposes. We understand that God gives us weakness so that he bless us. Align our will with His.
  7. Is as much concerned with motive and desire as with outward behavior.
  8. Anxious to be of service to others....especially quiet service. True submissiveness leads us to expect more of ourselves than with others.
  9. Cultivates a profound sens of gratitude. How unworthy of all of God's blessing that he gives to us.
  10. Does not take offense even when offense is intended.

Doing God's work in his way in Church education work. If we don't cultivate it we will lack power in what we try to do. Celebrity even among Seminary teachers can be a great snare.

Tower of Babel vs Abraham - humility.

Pres. Hunter: beware of being so influential that student become allegiant to you rather than the gospel

As CES we have contract as well covenant obligation. Contract is external and covenant is internal. Enforcement comes from outside and doe not achieve the desired results. Obedience is submissive from within. Teach the principal and thru submissiveness we will govern ourselves.

Adversity does not necessarily promote Christ like grown unless it is accompanied by submissiveness. Attitude is important in our ability to bend our will to the Lord's

Tests of Submissiveness

  1. Success is the most hazardous test, i.e, prosperity, etc. God blesses us and then we have the need to remain humble. The pride cycle. Have to be able to proper and remain humble.
  2. Most common test of submission is adversity and trial. Problems, sorrows, sadness. We are very vulnerable. Especially the righteous, because it doesn't make sense. Maxwell said: In the soil of adversity the root of bitterness can spring up.

No greater example of the submissive ness is our Savior. Even He was surprised by the burden Gethsemane. Thy will be done.

Secondly He called out, "Why has thou forsaken me?". Deepest practical lesson that the heart has to learn. Never was Christ ever so alone.. Divine horror at what was happening to him, but still he called to His God.

McDonald:
If we can only be faithful when we feel good, we are poor creatures. If we are this way we will never fulfill the full measure of our creation. God does not, by the gift of His spirit, say that He can always make us feel good. He wants us to choose the good , resist the evil. He wants us to act for ourselves to exercise the pure will for good.

Submissiveness is the kind of life we will live when we allow the Holy Ghost to have His way with us. Lord what will thou have me to do - Paul - the greatest guidance tends to come when we are willing to submit our will to His.

To the natural man it is the hardest to submit our will or near impossible .

What manner of man....even as I am.

All will be well as long as you come unto Christ. Absolute essential to receive the full benefits of the atonement. I will give you rest...my burden is light.

The only way to obtain what we truly desire. Please with the Lord for his will be to be done with his life and then go out and do it.

Sue
